The Story

The Solarguard Adjustable Solar Spike Bird Deterrent (130mm, Clear) is a no-drill bird-proofing strip designed to stop pigeons and other birds roosting or nesting underneath rooftop solar panels. Each 500mm section pairs a UV-stabilised polycarbonate base with a row of 130mm stainless steel pins that can be trimmed to length on site, making it ideal for arrays that don't have a traditional lip on the underside of the panel frame, as well as uneven roofs and profiled tin-clad roofing. This Clear base version is intended to blend in against lighter roof coverings and panel frames, and is fixed using Enviroguard Solar Speed Clips (sold separately) or a suitable weatherproof adhesive — with no drilling into the roof or panel frame required.

Working at Height & Sharp Components

Fitting bird spikes to a roof-mounted solar array means working at height. Always follow current HSE Working at Height guidance and use suitable fall-protection equipment, roof ladders, or crawl boards — never lean directly on solar panels. The stainless steel pins are sharp by design, so wear cut-resistant gloves when handling, trimming, or fitting the strips, and dispose of any trimmed offcuts safely.

Check Before You Order

This strip is supplied in 500mm sections with 130mm pins. Solar Speed Clips — used to fix the strip to the panel frame — are sold separately and come in 30mm, 35mm and 40mm depths to match different panel frame thicknesses, so measure your panel frame before ordering. If the gap between your roof and the underside of the panel is significantly larger than 130mm, the longer 160mm or 210mm Solarguard spikes will give better coverage.

No-Drill Fitting

Because Solarguard clips or adheres directly to the panel frame and roof surface, there's no need to drill into the panel frame or roof covering. The polycarbonate base can be snapped by hand on site to shorten a length for corners, and the whole strip unclips for access when panels need cleaning or maintenance.

UV-Stabilised Polycarbonate Base

The carrier strip is moulded from UV-stabilised polycarbonate, chosen because ordinary plastics can become brittle and discoloured after prolonged exposure to rooftop sun. This keeps the base flexible and structurally sound through repeated seasons of UK weather.

304-Grade Stainless Steel Pins

Each pin is drawn from 304-grade stainless steel wire around 2mm in diameter — resistant to the driving rain, condensation and coastal air found beneath solar panels, so the spikes won't rust or weaken over time.

Fully Adjustable & Trimmable

Supplied at a full 130mm pin length, every spike can be cut down with wire cutters to match the exact gap between your roof covering and the underside of the panel, so the deterrent sits snugly without leaving access gaps.

Built for Awkward Roof Profiles

Where many bird-proofing systems rely on clipping to a lip on the underside of the panel frame, Solarguard's clip- or adhesive-fixed base suits panels without that lip, plus uneven roofs and profiled tin-clad roofing where a rigid mesh frame would be difficult to fit cleanly.

No-Drill Fixing

Fixing is via Enviroguard Solar Speed Clips that grip the panel frame, or a weatherproof adhesive bead along the base — neither approach requires drilling into the panel frame or roof, avoiding fixing holes that could affect a panel's weathertightness.

Removable for Maintenance

Held in place by clips (or a peelable adhesive) rather than permanent fixings, sections can be lifted away when access is needed for panel cleaning, roof repairs, or future array expansion, then simply clipped back into place.

What's the difference between this Clear version and the Black version?
Both use the same 130mm stainless steel pins and 500mm UV-stabilised polycarbonate base; the only difference is the colour of the base, which is moulded clear rather than black. Choose whichever blends in best with your roof covering and panel frame colour.
Are the Solar Speed Clips included?
No — the clips used to fix the strip to your panel frame are sold separately and are available in 30mm, 35mm and 40mm depths to suit different panel frame thicknesses. Alternatively, the base can be fixed using a suitable weatherproof adhesive.
How many strips and clips will I need?
Measure the full perimeter of the area you want to protect, then order enough 500mm strips to cover that length (two strips per linear metre). Enviroguard recommends six Solar Speed Clips per linear metre — three per 500mm strip — for a secure fix.
Can the spikes and base be cut to fit my roof?
Yes. The 130mm stainless steel pins can be trimmed with wire cutters to match the gap between your roof and the panel underside, and the polycarbonate base can be snapped by hand to shorten a strip for a precise fit around corners.
Will fitting this void my solar panel warranty?
The system is designed to be fitted without drilling into the panel frame or roof, using clips that grip the frame or a weatherproof adhesive — an approach intended to avoid the kind of fixing holes that could affect a panel manufacturer's warranty. Always check your specific panel manufacturer's warranty terms if you're unsure.
Will this stop all birds from getting under my panels?
The spikes are an effective physical deterrent against pigeons and similar-sized birds looking to roost or nest underneath panels. Very small birds such as sparrows may still be able to pass through the spike spacing — if total exclusion of small birds is required, consider pairing with or choosing a mesh-based system instead.
