The Story

The Samsung EHS Mono Gen6 is a fully-contained monoblock air-to-water heat pump in which the complete refrigerant circuit — inverter-driven BLDC twin-rotary compressor, plate heat exchanger, and electronic expansion valve — is housed entirely within the outdoor unit. Only insulated water pipes run indoors, eliminating any requirement for F-Gas work on the indoor side and simplifying compliance with Building Regulations. The AE120RXYDEG/EU delivers a rated heating capacity of 12 kW at standard A7/W35 test conditions, achieving a Seasonal COP (SCOP) of 4.69 at LWT 35°C — ErP class A+++ — and SCOP 3.51 at LWT 55°C (A++) per EN 14825. This makes it eligible for the UK Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) when installed by an MCS-registered contractor. The unit operates reliably down to −25°C ambient and delivers flow temperatures up to 65°C, serving both low-temperature underfloor heating circuits and existing radiator systems. R32 refrigerant (GWP 675, ODP 0) reduces CO₂-equivalent emissions by 73% compared with R410A systems of equivalent capacity.

⚠  Installer & Safety Critical

  • F-Gas regulations apply. R32 is a fluorinated greenhouse gas (GWP 675). All installation, commissioning, and decommissioning work must be carried out by an F-Gas certified engineer. Refrigerant site records must be maintained.
  • No integral pressure relief valve. The outdoor unit does not include a PRV. A compliant pressure relief valve must be installed in the hydraulic circuit in accordance with BS EN 12828 and Building Regulations Part G.
  • MCS registration required for BUS grant. The unit and installation must be registered by an MCS-certified installer before the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is submitted.
  • Minimum system water volume: 50 litres. The installer must calculate total hydraulic circuit volume and add a buffer vessel if the minimum cannot be met from pipework and cylinder coil volume alone.

⚠  Compatibility & Advisory

  • Control module not included. The outdoor unit requires the Samsung MIM-E03CN control module (which includes Touch Controller MWR-WW10N) to operate. Order separately or as part of a ClimateHub package.
  • Wi-Fi not embedded. SmartThings App connectivity requires the optional MIM-H04N Wi-Fi Kit (sold separately).
  • Dedicated electrical circuit required: 35 A MCB. This unit draws MCA 28.0 A / MFA 35.0 A. Confirm available supply capacity and cable sizing to MCA before specifying.
  • Filter/strainer mandatory on the return water pipe to protect the outdoor unit heat exchanger from system debris. Clean regularly to maintain minimum flow rate.

  • 2-Zone Control supported — optimise a high-temperature radiator zone and a low-temperature underfloor heating zone independently from a single outdoor unit.
  • PV-Enabled & Smart Grid Ready — shifts electrical demand to periods of solar surplus or off-peak grid tariffs to minimise running costs.

Key Features

True Monoblock Architecture

Unlike a split heat pump, the EHS Mono houses the complete refrigerant circuit outdoors. No refrigerant pipework penetrates the building envelope — only insulated water pipes connect the outdoor unit to the indoor hydraulic system. This eliminates F-Gas work on the indoor side, broadens compatibility with third-party cylinders and control kits, and simplifies compliance with Building Regulations Part F.

SCOP 4.69 — ErP A+++ at LWT 35°C

Tested across a full seasonal load profile per EN 14825, this unit achieves SCOP 4.69 at a 35°C leaving water temperature — the ideal operating point for underfloor heating systems. At 55°C flow (for legacy radiator retrofits) the SCOP is 3.51 (A++), still considerably better than a condensing boiler. The inverter-driven compressor modulates continuously to match heat demand, avoiding on/off cycling losses and reducing wear.

−25°C Cold-Climate Performance

The unit maintains full rated output down to −7°C ambient (A−7/W35 peak condition: 12.0 kW) and continues to operate down to −25°C through compressor modulation and supplementary backup heating. Domestic hot water mode remains available down to −25°C, covering the entire range of UK winter conditions with confidence.

Up to 65°C Flow Temperature

A maximum leaving water temperature of 65°C allows this unit to serve legacy radiator systems without mandatory full system re-sizing, provided heat-loss calculations confirm adequate emitter output at the specified flow temperature. For maximum efficiency, the system is best designed to run at 45–55°C or lower, where the SCOP improvement over boiler operation is most significant.

Anti-Salt Heat Exchanger & Robust Casing

The louvred-fin heat exchanger uses G-Fin geometry with an Anti-Salt coating on fins and tubes to resist corrosion in coastal or industrially polluted environments. The powder-coated electro-galvanised steel casing in Samsung's Earth Brown finish provides additional weathering protection. Two axial-flow fans with BLDC motors (2 × 125 W) deliver 99 m³/min airflow at 650 rpm for high throughput with low electrical draw.

Smart Connectivity & Energy Management

Via the optional MIM-H04N Wi-Fi Kit, the unit integrates with the Samsung SmartThings ecosystem for remote on/off, scheduling, and energy monitoring from iOS or Android. The Touch Controller MWR-WW10N (included with MIM-E03CN) supports 2-Zone temperature scheduling, error monitoring, and summer-mode cooling. Smart Grid Ready and PV-Enabled logic allow demand shifting toward off-peak tariffs or surplus solar generation.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶  Does this unit qualify for the UK Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant?
Yes. The AE120RXYDEG/EU is MCS listed and qualifies for the BUS grant (currently £7,500 for air source heat pumps). The installation must be completed by an MCS-certified installer, and the unit must be registered under the scheme before the grant claim is submitted. The installer is responsible for MCS registration and EPC requirements.
▶  Can this heat pump work with my existing radiators as well as underfloor heating?
Yes. The unit can supply flow temperatures up to 65°C, making it capable of driving legacy radiator systems. However, the greatest efficiency — SCOP 4.69 at LWT 35°C — is achieved at lower flow temperatures. Most retrofit projects involve upsizing radiators to allow the system to run at 45–55°C rather than 70–80°C, significantly improving seasonal efficiency and reducing running costs. A heat-loss survey and radiator capacity check by a qualified installer are essential before specifying flow temperatures.
▶  What control module and accessories are required?
The outdoor unit alone is not a complete system. The following are required or recommended:
  • MIM-E03CN Control Module (includes Touch Controller MWR-WW10N) — mandatory for operation and commissioning
  • Cylinder or hydraulic module — Samsung ClimateHub (AE200/AE260 series, 200 L or 260 L) or a compatible third-party unvented cylinder with heating coil and controls
  • Filter/strainer on the return pipe (mandatory)
  • MIM-H04N Wi-Fi Kit — optional, for SmartThings remote access
▶  What is the minimum system water volume and when is a buffer vessel needed?
Samsung specifies a minimum of 50 litres total hydraulic circuit volume for the 12 kW and 16 kW models. This includes water held in the cylinder coil, distribution pipework, and any buffer vessel. In compact installations with short pipe runs, circuit volume may fall short of 50 litres; in this case a dedicated buffer vessel must be fitted to prevent short-cycling and protect the compressor. Your installer will calculate the total volume during the design stage.
▶  How does the 12 kW model compare to the 16 kW AE160RXYDEG/EU?
Both models share the same 940 × 1,420 × 330 mm footprint, 110 kg weight, and 1-inch BSPP water connections, and both run from a single-phase 220–240 V supply. The 12 kW variant suits well-insulated properties up to approximately 150–200 m², while the 16 kW is appropriate for larger or less well-insulated homes. The 16 kW requires a 40 A MCB vs 35 A for the 12 kW. Both achieve SCOP A+++ at LWT 35°C.
▶  Is the unit suitable for coastal or exposed outdoor locations?
The heat exchanger is treated with Samsung's Anti-Salt coating on both fins and tube surfaces for enhanced corrosion resistance in coastal and polluted atmospheres. The powder-coated electro-galvanised steel casing further protects against weathering. For highly exposed coastal sites (within ~500 m of breaking surf), additional protective measures or more frequent inspection and cleaning may be advisable. Always discuss the site environment with your installer as part of the heat pump survey.
