Rather than a single central inverter, the IQ Battery 5P contains six individual IQ8D-BAT Microinverters distributed across the battery cells. LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry is the most thermally stable lithium battery technology available. Unlike NMC cells (used in many EV and home battery products), LFP does not undergo thermal runaway under overcharge or physical damage conditions, delivering maximum safety for residential installation. LFP also delivers superior cycle life and retains capacity across a wider operating temperature range — ideal for UK loft, garage, and utility room installations.
The battery delivers 27.8 A peak current for up to 3 seconds (22.26 A for 10 seconds) during backup operation. This high peak capability is what allows the system to start motor loads — such as refrigerator compressors, washing machine motors, and boiler pumps — that demand a surge of current at startup well above their steady-state draw. Without adequate peak current capacity, a backup battery system would trip or fail to start these common household loads.
The IQ Battery 5P uses natural convection (passive cooling) with no moving parts or fans. Fan-cooled batteries have a known failure mode — blocked or failed fans cause overheating and capacity degradation. Passive cooling eliminates this entirely, producing zero fan noise and removing a key maintenance requirement.
